MAI’s architectural department has four licensed architects on staff, each with over 15 years of experience in a variety of projects.  We have LEED accredited Professionals on staff with extensive experience in projects incorporating sustainable design.  Collaborative teamwork marks our company approach which is further facilitated by maintaining all engineering expertise in house, which allows us to respond to the needs of current and future clients as well as the changing market.  Our clients are as diverse as the projects we work on, ranging from minor interior renovations to large scale new construction.

Municipal

MAI has completed a wide range of municipal buildings ranging from Fire Department facilities to Police Buildings, Town Halls and Maintenance Facilities.  We create functional, efficient, secure buildings that set out to connect residents to their Fire, Police and Local Government Officials.  Our designs target the unique needs of each community while keeping the project within the budget and on schedule.

Parks and Recreation

Parks and Recreation projects are instrumental in adding value to any community.  Whether it’s building a recreation center or aiding in the preservation of our natural environment, MAI strives to produce the best possible solutions helping to improve the quality of life for community members.  MAI has completed numerous projects with the Forest Preserve District of Cook County (FPDCC) over the years, where the focus is the enjoyment, education and restoration of our Forests and Parks. 

Research & Technology

When designing for research/technology facilities we focus on understanding the constant evolution of research and knowing and implementing the most cutting-edge technology available.  MAI is highly experienced in lab planning and programming.  We concentrate on encouraging a collaborative and flexible environment while complying with all regulatory and life safety codes.  Our projects have included various lab renovations for the University of Chicago, as well as faculty offices and multi-media conference centers.

Healthcare

Our healthcare design focuses on creating environments that are highly functional and flexible while incorporating the most innovative technologies and programming needs for our clients. We provide solutions that enhance well being and promote healing creating a comfortable experience for patients, families and staff.  Our projects include the renovation of an existing hospital, a brand new state-of-the-art facility serving as the new County hospital, an outpatient pharmacy outgrowing its current location and an emergency department at capacity needing additions and renovations to accommodate the growing number of visitors.

Transportation

Transportation projects require expertise in planning, programming, surveying and design. The experience MAI offers allows us to address the many transit related challenges presented such as overcrowding, aging infrastructure and security needs.  Safety, low maintenance, and low cost of operations are among the priorities while keeping in mind the convenience and comfort of an easily navigated station.  Public Transit Stations for the CTA and Metra as well as pedestrian bridges and bridge façade treatments are among our various transportation centered projects.

Sustainable Design / LEED

From the largest intensive green roof project in North America, to the first Green Roof building at O’Hare airport, to the first set of LEED GOLD certified buildings in the Forest Preserve of Cook County, McDonough Associates has made it a point to be at the forefront of sustainable design.  The knowledge and expertise of our on-staff LEED accredited professionals have contributed to the successful completion of several LEED certified projects.
